Almost 3 years after that very first conversation, in October of 2022, Gus planned an amazing weekend to Deer Valley for us. It was a peculiar time for us to go on a trip since it was in the midst of Gus’s hunting season. Even more peculiar, Gus was the one to take point on planning everything – activities, dinner reservations, hikes – he is not the vacation planner of the pair. Jess was now the oblivious one.
We arrived in Deer Valley early in the morning and set out on a hike Gus had selected based on strict instructions from Jess that she didn’t want to do a 15-mile ‘death march’ before they checked into their amazing hotel. October is such an incredible time to go to the mountains with the Aspen leaves changing from greens to bright oranges, yellows, and reds – this change only lasts a few weeks and then the leaves start to fall. As we were driving to the hike Gus was commenting on how stunning the views were and how lucky we were to be there right at that time. The leaves were so vibrant, it looked like a soft wind could make them fall to the ground at any moment.
We started our hike and were disappointed to find there were no aspens anywhere on the trail – and way too many people! We got to our destination and Jess promptly said, “I don’t like it here, lets turn around and find somewhere else”. After a quick plea from Gus to go a little further (to the spot he had picked out) he acquiesced, and they started hiking all the way back out.
After driving for a bit we found a fantastic 10-mile loop winding in and out of the most beautiful trees. About 3 miles in we came to an incredible overlook which Jess announced to be her favorite of the day! We went about another 100 yards, then Jess abruptly told Gus she is done with the hike and ready to turn back. Gus started to just slightly panic, knowing it was now or never – We started making our way back but stopped at the overlook one more time. While Jess took a moment to soak in the view, Gus made a fuss about needing a ‘snack’ and started digging for something in his backpack.
When Jess turned around to poke fun at Gus for his constant snacking, she spotted a little red box in his hand. Completely shocked, as they had never gone ring shopping or talked about the details of what she wanted, Jess watched Gus get down on one knee, and open the box that held the most stunning diamond ring. He barely got out the words “Will you marry me?” before Jess said, “Of course, I will marry you!”
We want to thank our amazing family and friends for the support, love, and happiness they’ve given us. We can’t wait to share and celebrate our love with everyone soon!
The beginning of Jess and Gus’ Story
We met while working at Inspirato the summer of 2019. Jess had been working at the company for over half a year befriending many in her pod area including Gus’s sister, Brook! Gus came into the office a couple of times to take Brook to lunch and Jess always noticed him, asking about him afterward. In June 2019 he got a job in the same department. Jess had the biggest crush on him and made sure everyone knew, hoping Gus would hear about it through the grapevine. Gus was oblivious.
A few months later around Jess’s birthday we finally sat next to each other during a department meeting, immediately striking up a conversation. Jess was smitten and Gus finally started to open his eyes that Jess was maybe, just possibly, flirting with him! After an invite to her birthday party and a coy play at getting him to ask her to dinner, we were finally going on our first date to Urban Farmer in downtown Denver. We sat at that restaurant for hours chatting, eating, drinking, and having the best time just being together. When the date was over Gus drove Jess home like the perfect gentleman.
We were inseparable and much to our friends and families' surprise committed to each other only a few weeks later.
Until we say “I do”
